Where to Watch the World Cup

This year’s World Cup, held in Russia, has been absolutely riveting. From early surprises like Mexico’s win over Germany, to Japan’s exceptional effort against Belgium, there has been plenty of excitement even for us Americans, who did not qualify this time.

No matter which team you’re supporting, the best thing about a World Cup is how it brings together people from every possible background. Let’s forget our differences, political and otherwise, and cheer on our favorites with a beer and some futbol-friendly snacks – we’ve rounded up the best places in the Bay to catch the action.

East Bay

Paulista Brazilian Kitchen and Taproom

A cafeteria-like sitting area with a large communal table and barstools facing the street gives this new restaurant in the Dimond district of Oakland a homestyle vibe. You can’t go wrong with $3.50 empanadas!

The Cooler

Independent craft beer is the specialty of this downtown San Leandro joint, which just celebrated its 2nd anniversary. Brews come in 16 oz, 8 oz, or 5 oz options – perfect for sampling. Not into beer? They’ve got nitro coffee on tap!

Brews & Brats

Germany’s out of the World Cup without getting to defend their last title (they call it the champion’s curse) but that’s no reason to give up brats during match time! With five large screens, and amazing truffle fries for non-meat eaters, this Hayward brewpub is a terrific option for those weekend games.
